About Recarbono
We turn biomass into permanent carbon storage
Recarbono is a biochar project developer — we engineer, build and operate carbon removal, starting in Portugal and built to deploy anywhere biomass burns instead of banking carbon, and verify every tonne end to end. We bring rigour to a young market so durable removal earns the trust it needs to scale.
Integrity drives value. Our mission is to make carbon removal something buyers can verify — tonne by tonne, from the biomass in the field to the retired credit — on digital infrastructure we build ourselves.
The market shift
The market stopped paying for volume
For a decade the carbon market rewarded tonnage. Cheap credits, generous assumptions, and a buyer base that had not yet been asked hard questions. That era is over — ended not by idealism but by scrutiny: journalism that took claims apart, ratings agencies that scored them, and finance teams that discovered a retired credit can become a liability.
What replaced it is a market that pays for carbon it can verify. Value now concentrates in projects with environmental integrity, robust certification, transparent governance and rigorous measurement backed by full traceability. This is the deeper transformation in climate finance: capital is moving toward measurable outcomes, regulatory certainty and long-term environmental value — and away from everything else.
The frameworks are converging on the same answer. The EU's CRCF is writing quantification, additionality, storage duration and sustainability into law. ICVCM's core principles set a quality floor for the voluntary market. CORSIA eligibility and alignment with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement define what a credit must satisfy to count in compliance contexts. None of these reward volume. All of them reward proof.
So the implication for us is not subtle: we are not building for volume alone, but for the quality, credibility and transparency of every project we develop. Scientific rigor, internationally recognised standards, transparent governance and high-quality dMRV are what position a supplier in the premium end of this market, attract long-term capital, and earn trusted partnerships across both voluntary and compliance markets. That is the challenge, and it is the opportunity.
A note on precision, since this page is about integrity: those frameworks describe the standard we build to satisfy, not designations we already hold. Biochar removals are not currently CORSIA-eligible, and Article 6 alignment requires host-country authorisation. We will say so plainly on the day that changes, and not before. See our explainer on the EU CRCF.
What we stand for
Principles before promises
Scientific rigor
Permanence measured from the material itself, not inferred from process settings — R₀ petrography and per-batch laboratory analysis.
Conservative by design
When the sensor and the laboratory disagree, the credit will reflect the laboratory. Uncertainty is deducted, never averaged.
Recognised standards
Built to the strictest reading of the frameworks that matter — EBC and WBC, the Puro.earth and Isometric methodologies, and the EU's CRCF — so every tonne stays defensible as the rules harden.
Transparent governance
Verification that does not answer to production. Every reported figure traces back to a raw record an auditor can retrace, on demand.
Engineered in-house
We design, build and operate our own pyrolysis and dMRV stack — control over quality, uptime and data integrity.
Rooted locally
Fire-risk biomass sourced within a short radius of our sites; value — jobs, soil, heat — returns to the territory it came from.

Who is building this

Gonçalo Lopes
Co-founder & CEO
Leads the integrated chain Recarbono is built on — the first-site build, the certification path and the CarbonVision dMRV platform — on one rule: claim nothing the evidence cannot carry. A petroleum engineer with an MBA and an Executive Master in Finance, he spent his career on the front line of energy operations in more than twenty countries before specialising in turning cleantech into assets that institutional investors can finance.

Nuno Giraldo Torres
Co-founder & COO
Owns execution — the first-site build and commissioning, the feedstock and supplier network, and the delivery of production and client engineering units. A mechanical engineer with more than two decades in execution engineering and a consolidated portfolio in solar generation — EPC, renewables, energy efficiency and thermal systems — exactly the rigour it takes to build and operate the infrastructure of decarbonisation.

Tiago Quelhas
Co-founder & Chief Legal and Corporate Affairs Officer
Owns the legal spine — contracts, permitting, governance and the CRCF framing that turns carbon-removal regulation into certifiable, bankable assets. A jurist with dual fluency in finance and environment, forged between banking risk and the renewables sector, he is the face of Recarbono's institutional relations and strategic partnerships.
